Real or Pretend?

Could it really happen? A quick game for telling real from made-up.
Set up
Use picture books and ads, or the cards on this device.
How to play
- Show a picture or describe a scene: “A dog drives a bus.”
- Your child says: real or pretend?
- Ask: how can you tell?
- Each of you invents one pretend thing and one real thing.
- Show your child one ad this week and play again.
What to say
- “Could that happen in real life?”
- “Who made this, and why?”
Easier: Very silly pretend things.
Harder: Ads: is the toy really that big? Does it really fly?
End with one question: “How can you tell if something is real?”
