Number Duel

Ages 8–11 · 5 minutes · You’ll need: Nothing

Quick-fire sums for two: plus, minus, times or divide. The explanation scores the point, not the speed.

Set up

Play on paper, or on this device: choose + − × or ÷ and the game picks the next level from how the last round went.

How to play

  1. Pick who answers first.
  2. Read the sum aloud and answer it.
  3. Say in one sentence how you worked it out.
  4. Swap after each sum, or play as one team.
  5. After ten sums, say how it felt: too easy, just right or too hard.

What to say

  • “How did you work that out?”
  • “Is there a quicker way?”
  • “Nice, you made ten first.”

Easier: Stay with sums to 10 and use fingers or the dot picture.

Harder: The grown-up gets bigger numbers, or you both race the clock as a team.

End with one question: “Which sum made you think hardest?”
